Restoring an apartment within a landmark building designed by McKim, Mead & White required both flexibility and a careful eye for detail. Many of the original features had been lost over time, so the project focused on thoughtfully reinstating historic character while upgrading the home with modern services.
Inspired by the building’s Venetian palazzo style, finishes were restored with respect for its architectural heritage. The restoration introduced crafted wood wainscoting, custom plaster moldings, silk wallcoverings, and limestone floors detailed with slate cabochons, all chosen to echo the building’s historic character with precision. Three original chimneys were also carefully restored to full working order, preserving both their functionality and architectural significance
During the process an original lattice dome of a previous sun room was uncovered after being hidden for decades, unknown to the previous and new residents.
Exterior elements were also restored with custom ironwork and bluestone pavers, carefully selected to be sympathetic to the original design while creating a durable and functional outdoor space.
